Privacy Technology (08-709)

The Privacy Technology course will introduce students to key definitions of privacy used by privacy experts and US regulators, and demonstrate how to apply these definitions to information technology design through coursework. These definitions are drawn from the OECD Guidelines on the Protection of Privacy and Transborder Flows, and US regulations, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability (HIPAA) Privacy Rule. Students will be able to read and extract IT requirements from regulatory documents, to reason about which requirements apply to a given business application, to apply privacy principles to a software design, and argue why a given design achieves privacy in relation to maximizing data use and meeting business needs.
