2016 Practicum Competition
The MSIT eBusiness Technology program’s annual Practicum Competition took place at Carnegie Mellon University on August 26, 2016. Eleven teams comprised of approximately six students had 20 minutes to present their business solutions using the latest technologies in hopes of winning a prize. This public competition occurs at the end of the program's required 9-week practicum project, which is the culmination of the skills learned throughout the students' year in the program. The practicum project is beyond an internship, as it involves real accountability, rigor and high levels of responsibility. The student teams put their education to the test to solve a problem for a corporate sponsor. Their work includes business analysis, systems requirements and design, testing, and documentation. A Carnegie Mellon faculty member coaches each team for the duration of the project. Though the practicum project provides invaluable work experience for the master’s students, the corporate sponsors greatly benefit from the equivalent of one year of work from an employee.
The company sponsors for the 2016 Practicum Competition were Atlas Talent Agency, BNY Mellon, Comvibe, Design Center, DICK’S Sporting Goods, e.e. Books, Naturi, Newton Consulting, Promenant Management, RoBotany, and Tiversa.
The judges for the 2016 MSIT eBusiness Practicum Competition were Vaish Krishnamurthy (CEO & Founder of CleanRobotics), Dr. Marc Shane Malandro (Founding Director of the University of Pittsburgh Innovation Institute), and Edward Yuanxing Zhang (Executive Director of Tsing Ventures [North America]) a 2013 graduate of the MSIT eBusiness program.
The winner of the 2016 Best Practicum Award went to team RoBotany who took home the $18,000 prize. The second place prize of $12,000 went to Tiversa and the third place of $6,000 went to Promenant Management.
